"The storm is coming, but the Anchor holds."

The Failing Heart and the Coming Storm: Navigating a World in Commotion

In the shadows of the escalating conflict with Iran and the growing instability across our globe, many feel a sense of "impending doom" that they can’t quite name. We are living in an era defined by headlines that shake our sense of security. Yet, for those who look to the Word, these days were described long ago.

The Prophecy of Fear

In Luke 21, Jesus provides a roadmap for the spirit of the end times. He offers both a warning and a command:

"But when ye shall hear of wars and commotions, be not terrified: for these things must first come to pass; but the end is not by and by." (Luke 21:9)

Despite this command to "be not terrified," many today find themselves overwhelmed. Verse 26 describes a specific condition: "men's hearts failing them for fear, and for looking after those things which are coming on the earth." This isn't just a physical ailment; it is a spiritual exhaustion. People can sense that something massive is on the horizon—a change that will alter the world forever. While the world looks at geopolitical strategies, God's people must look at the spiritual reality: the "powers of heaven shall be shaken."

The Withdrawal of the Restraining Spirit

We are witnessing a storm of unprecedented conflict and calamity. This isn't merely the result of poor diplomacy or chance; it is fueled by the gradual withdrawal of God's restraining Spirit.

As the world rejects the divine, the "shield of truth" is cast aside. This leaves a vacuum that is quickly filled by the enemy. Leaders and citizens alike see the signs of trouble—the economic shifts, the wars, the social unrest—but they fail to discern the true cause. They attribute these crises to politics or sociology, missing the intensifying end-time scenario playing out behind the veil.

The Corruption of the Foundations

When we look at our institutions, the decay is evident. We see a mirror of Isaiah 59:14: “Justice standeth afar off: for truth is fallen in the street, and equity cannot enter.”

  • Courts of Justice: Once a bastion of fairness, many are now beclouded by a desire for gain and sensual pleasure.

  • Leadership: Rulers are often actuated by ego and intemperance rather than service.

  • The Blur of Distinctions: Perhaps most tragically, the line between the professed follower of Christ and the world has become nearly invisible. Many have accepted a "form of godliness" while denying its power.

The Enemy’s Delight in War

Satan delights in war because it accomplishes two things: it excites the worst passions of the human soul and sweeps victims into eternity unprepared. By inciting nations against one another, the enemy successfully diverts our minds from the most important task of all: preparation to stand in the day of God.

While we watch the missiles and the maneuvers, we must remember that the enemy is also at work through:

  • Calamities by land and sea: Tornadoes, floods, and earthquakes.

  • Pestilence and Famine: The "deadly taint" in the air and the destruction of harvests.

As Isaiah 24:4-5 says, "The earth mourneth and fadeth away... because they have transgressed the laws, changed the ordinance, broken the everlasting covenant."

A Call to Readiness

The visitation of these disasters will only become more frequent and disastrous. This is not a time for spiritual slumber or for joining the world in its revelry.

If your heart is failing for fear, turn your eyes away from the "commotions" and toward the Savior. The storm is coming, but God's people have a shelter. The time to get ready is not when the storm hits, but now, while the winds are still being held.

Reflection Questions for Readers:

  1. Is your peace dependent on the news cycle, or on the Word of God?

  2. In what ways have the "distinctions" between your life and the world become blurred?

  3. How can you practically "prepare to stand" in the coming days?

Your Spiritual Readiness Checklist

If you feel the "failing of heart" described in Luke 21, the remedy is not to watch more news, but to deepen your spiritual foundation. Here are four ways to begin your preparation today:

1. Rebuild the "Shield of Truth."

The greatest danger in the coming storm is delusion. To avoid being "swept into the ranks of spiritualism," you must know the Word for yourself.

  • Action: Commit to 15 minutes of uninterrupted Bible study each morning—focusing specifically on the life of Christ and His promises of protection.

2. Draw the Line of Distinction

As the world becomes more "ungodly," the follower of Christ must become more distinct. We cannot love what the world loves and expect to have the power of God.

  • Action: Audit your media, your habits, and your conversations this week. Ask yourself: "Does this align with the 'form of godliness' or the 'power of Godliness'?"

3. Seek the Restraining Spirit

While God’s Spirit is being withdrawn from the world, it is being poured out on those who ask. We need His restraint in our own lives to keep our passions and fears in check.

  • Action: Make "The Prayer of Jabez" or a prayer for spiritual discernment your daily habit. Ask God to keep His hand upon you and to give you eyes to see the "true spiritual cause" behind world events.

4. Become a "Watchman" for Others

War and calamity are the enemy's tools of diversion. Counteract this by pointing others toward the only true security.

  • Action: Reach out to one person this week who is struggling with anxiety over the news. Share Luke 21:9 with them as a source of peace rather than fear.

The Watchman

About Larry Nicholas, in an era of "wars and commotions," Larry is dedicated to looking beyond the headlines to the spiritual realities shifting beneath our feet. With a focus on biblical prophecy and the sobering warnings of Luke 21, Larry serves as a voice calling for spiritual sobriety. Believing that the "restraining Spirit" is being withdrawn, he writes to help God’s people discern the signs of the times, cast off the delusions of the world, and prepare to stand firm in the coming storm.

Such a powerful read. Please stay prayed up. Whatever you see going on around you, don't go with the flow. Don't go with what everybody else is doing . Stay in position. Know your position in Christ . The Lord is not playing and what is about to come on this earth will not be a pretty sight . Over and over God has given people the opportunity to repent,to turn from sin and let him in. He extended grace. Everyday that we are alive God is extending grace. Let us get our house in order starting with me and pray for our love ones in the world and this world so they too can hear can be in God's…
